Thomas Theodore Raymond

Thomas T. Raymond, 88, of Mooresville, NC passed away peacefully September 5 following a brief illness. Born at Ft. Jay, NY, he was the sixth of eight children of Colonel Allen D. Raymond Jr. and Clara Raymond (née Leonard). He is survived by two children: daughter Claire Poore (Kevin) and son Thomas, both of Lexington, KY. Aside from his children, he is survived by brother Allen (preceded in death by wife Ellie and currently married to Mary) and was preceded in death by sisters Nan England (Willie, deceased) and Marg Peck (Earl, deceased); and by brothers Chuck (Connie, deceased); Bill (wife Bette survives); John (wife Grace survives); and Bob (Shirley, deceased). Being from a large family, Tom also had many nieces, nephews, and cousins who were an important part of his life. He lived in numerous locations due to his father's Army career, residing in such places as Heidelberg, Germany, Ft. Belvoir, VA and St. Petersburg, FL. Tom served as a soldier himself in the late 1950s in the Army Security Agency in Herzogenaurach, Germany. He attended the University of Florida, from which he graduated with a degree in Industrial Engineering. After a brief time in Gainesville, FL, he and then wife Claire (née Greer) ventured to Lexington, where he subsequently earned a Master of Business Administration at the University of Kentucky. Tom began a career at IBM, first in Lexington and later in Charlotte. Always a teacher at heart, Tom followed his IBM career with a 15-year tenure instructing industrial engineering technology at Gaston College until retirement. His many interests included sailing, bridge, reading, puzzles of any kind (especially Wordle, Sudoku and crosswords), Kentucky Wildcats and Florida Gators sports, model trains and any get-togethers with many relatives at bi-annual family reunions. He was a member of the Lake Norman Yacht Club for more than 40 years, including a year's tour as the club's Commodore in 2018. Later in life he acquired an unsurpassed passion for thoroughbred horse racing, spending the last 15 years of his life engaging as a part owner of racehorses with West Point Thoroughbreds. There will be a visitation September 17 at Cavin-Cook Funeral Home, 494 East Plaza Drive (Hwy 150) in Mooresville from 5-7 p.m., followed by a funeral mass at 11 a.m. the next day at St. Therese Catholic Church, 217 Brawley School Rd., Mooresville. A private burial at Lexington Cemetery will follow at a later date. In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to a charity of your choice.
