Elaine Culbertson, 83, passed away peacefully at her home in Concord, NC on April 15, 2026, surrounded by her loving family. Elaine was born on May 21, 1942, in Mooresville, North Carolina to Murray and Virginia Sykes. She spent most of her life in Mooresville, where she built a life centered on family, love, and creating lasting memories. She was preceded in death by her husband, Jack Wilson Culbertson Sr., with whom she shared 38 years of marriage. Their love story began when Jack moved in across the street from her when she was just 14 years old. Elaine told his mother she was going to marry her son, and although he was not interested at the time, life had other plans. After returning home from serving in the Navy, they went on three dates before he asked her to marry him. Together, they built a life filled with love, laughter, and family in Mooresville. Elaine was a devoted mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother. She is survived by her children: Jeanette Hinson, Jack Culbertson Jr., Mark Culbertson, Brian Culbertson (Mona Piercy), and foster son Joey Strother. She is also survived by her grandchildren: Kristi Swanson (Chris Swanson), Jennifer Hinson Harris (Justin Harris), Melissa Miller, Drew Culbertson, and Jeffery Culbertson. Her legacy continues through her great-grandchildren: Makayla Keziah-Isaacs, Victoria Swanson, Noah Jackson Swanson, Remington Jack Hinson, Sofia Hiles, Jake Culbertson, Julian Culbertson, Lily Culbertson, Eva Culbertson, and Jace Culbertson. Elaine is also survived by her sisters-in-law, Carol Benfield and Nancy Johnson, as well as numerous nieces and nephews. She was a special friend to many, including Elaine Austin, Linda Huffman, Steve Rollin, Joyce Suther, and Carolyn Cook. Elaine worked a retail seamstress at Belks and John Mack & Son, at the snack bar at Moor Lanes and she was a Girl & Cub Scout leader. She enjoyed bowling, Sudoku, puzzles, cooking, baking, bingo, and researching family history. More than anything, she loved spending time with her family and making memories that will be cherished for generations. She will be remembered for her warmth, her humor, and the love she gave so freely to everyone around her. A graveside service will be held at 3:00 PM on Sunday at Willow Valley Cemetery in Mooresville, North Carolina, where family and friends are invited to gather and celebrate her life.
