John Patrick Carter, Jr. Beloved husband, father, brother, sailor, and friend John Patrick Carter, Jr., of Mooresville, North Carolina, passed away peacefully on Monday, August 3, 2025, surrounded by loved ones. He was a man of deep character, steadfast faith, and irrepressible humor, who lived a full and meaningful life defined by service, love, and joy. Born on Long Island, New York, John's unmistakable accent was often the first thing people noticed-though it was quickly eclipsed by his quick wit, engaging smile, and the unmistakable twinkle in his eye. While John spent much of his life using a wheelchair, he never allowed his disability to define or limit him. Instead, he met life's challenges with humor, creativity, and determination, turning obstacles into opportunities. John earned a Bachelor of Business Administration from Hofstra University, an MBA from St. John's University, and a Master of Pastoral Studies from Loyola University. A lifelong learner and voracious reader, John shared his insights and spiritual reflections through a personal five-minute homily series that touched many. John learned to sail at the Wet Pants Sailing Association in Sayville, New York, and eventually competed internationally, traveling to England, Norway, Denmark, Sweden, Spain, and Switzerland. He was a familiar face at the Lake Norman Yacht Club, where he gave generously of his time and talents, serving as club treasurer and a certified US Sailing judge. John also gave back through his involvement with St. Therese Catholic Church, the Mooresville Christian Mission, his service on the Courtyards at Brawley Point construction committee, and his participation in the men's Bible study group at Davidson College Presbyterian Church. He is survived by his devoted wife of 15 years, Kathy Carter, who was his constant companion and source of strength. Their marriage was a true partnership, built on laughter, shared values, and unwavering support. He also leaves behind his cherished daughter, Emily (Jeff) Small, with whom he shared countless fond memories-from pony shows and early morning pastry stops. John is also survived by his twin sister, Mary Carter, who was his lifelong confidante, travel companion, and fellow adventurer. He was predeceased by his sister, Cathy Carter, and parents, John Patrick Carter, Sr. and Lillian Shields Carter whose memories remained dear to his heart. John's legacy is one of resilience, compassion, curiosity, and deep faith. He lived with grace and left an indelible impression on everyone he met. His strength in the face of suffering was nothing short of inspiring, and his unwavering belief in God's plan carried him-and those who loved him-through even the most difficult days. John truly fought the good fight, finished the race, and kept the faith. He will be deeply missed and forever remembered by family and friends. A memorial service will be held at 11:00 AM on Friday, August 8th at St. Therese Catholic Church, Mooresville, NC.
