Edgar "Eddie" Byron Dickerson Some people are remembered for the races they won. Others are remembered for the lives they touched. Edgar "Eddie D" Byron Dickerson was both. Born on July 17, 1955, in Milford, Delaware, to John Dickerson Sr. and Marion Nailer Dickerson, Eddie grew up with an adventurous spirit and an endless curiosity for anything with wheels. After graduating from Milford High School in 1973 and later attending Delaware Technical Community College in Georgetown, he chased a dream that became a remarkable career spanning more than forty years in NASCAR. What began on go-kart tracks became a lifetime devoted to racing. Eddie made two NASCAR Cup Series starts during the 1980 season at Richmond and Dover before discovering where his greatest talents truly belonged, behind the scenes. Gifted with an exceptional mechanical mind and an unmatched work ethic, he built a reputation as one of the sport's most respected craftsmen. In the racing world, many knew him as "Fast Eddie," a nickname that reflected the speed, energy, and passion he brought to everything he did. From his early years with Buddy Arrington, Jack Beebe's Race Hill Farm team, and Billy Hagan Racing, Eddie earned the trust of some of NASCAR's biggest names. His craftsmanship helped build Daytona 500 winning cars for Cale Yarborough in 1984 and Darrell Waltrip in 1989. He was recognized with NASCAR All Pro Second Team honors as Body Man in 1988 and Fabricator in 1989 and later served as crew chief for Rusty Wallace with Penske Racing. His career reached its pinnacle at Hendrick Motorsports, where he became Director of Chassis Engineering and led research and development efforts that helped produce countless race winning and championship caliber cars. Working at the forefront of NASCAR innovation, Eddie helped develop and refine the technology behind some of the sport's most successful race cars during one of Hendrick Motorsports' greatest eras. Respected throughout the garage for his innovation, leadership, and ability to solve problems others could not, Eddie helped shape the organization through his craftsmanship, knowledge, and dedication. While trophies and victories filled the record books, those who worked beside him will remember the craftsman, mentor, and friend whose fingerprints were on far more than race cars. But if you asked Eddie what mattered most, the conversation probably would not stay on racing for long. He loved life. He loved the water, especially taking his cigarette boat to the sandbar where family and friends gathered for long summer days. Some of Chad's favorite memories were made riding wave runners across the lake, racing dirt bikes and go-karts, snowboarding together, and traveling to new places. Eddie believed life was meant to be experienced, and he made sure those around him experienced it with him. He was the kind of man who walked into a room and immediately made it more fun. His charisma was effortless, his laugh was contagious, and his personality was unforgettable. His familiar greeting, "It's me, Eddie D," always brought a smile to those who knew him. He never met a stranger and genuinely enjoyed giving people an opportunity. Many were grateful for the confidence he placed in them and for the chance to prove themselves. One of the greatest lessons Eddie passed on was to learn from life's mistakes. Whenever something went wrong, he would simply ask, "Did you learn something?" It was more than a question. It was his philosophy. He believed that every setback carried a lesson if you were willing to look for it, and that wisdom has remained with those who loved him. Eddie was preceded in death by his parents, John Dickerson Sr. and Marion Dickerson, and his brother-in-law, Richard Green. He is survived by his son, Dr. Chad Dickerson and his wife, Michelle; the mother of his son, Carole Dickerson; his brother, John "Jack" Dickerson Jr. and his wife, Nancy; his sister, Priscilla Green; along with many beloved nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles, cousins, lifelong friends, and countless members of the NASCAR community who were fortunate enough to know him. Whether you knew him from the race shop, on the lake, in the garage, or simply as a friend, you knew that life was more enjoyable when Eddie was around. His legacy lives on not only through the race cars he built and the victories he helped achieve, but also through the opportunities he gave others, the laughter he shared, the lessons he taught, and the memories he created. From a young boy chasing speed on Delaware go-kart tracks to helping build championship race cars at NASCAR's highest level, Eddie never lost his sense of adventure or his love for the people who shared the ride. For those fortunate enough to know him, Eddie's greatest race was never measured by the checkered flag, but by the lives he touched, the opportunities he gave, and the memories he leaves behind.
