The legendary Michael Gregory (Greg) Jones of Terrell, N.C., husband of Susan Jones, completed his time on earth and entered his eternal rest on June 9, 2026. He was 65 years old and got the most out of his time on this side of eternity. Greg was born in Anderson, S.C., on December 16, 1960, to the late Wallace Jones and Candy Gilman. He graduated from T.L. Hanna High School in 1979, where he played football for the Yellow Jackets during the famous "Radio" years. After high school, Greg attended Clemson University where he saw the Tigers win their first national championship with a 1982 Orange Bowl win over Nebraska. He graduated from Clemson in 1983 with a B.S. in Entomology. After a few years utilizing his degree, Greg decided to change paths and pursue a career as an air traffic controller. He retired as an air traffic controller after 31 years, having worked at the Atlanta Air Traffic Control Center and the Charlotte Tower. In 1987, he married Susan Brown. In years that followed they had two children Matthew and Rachel Jones. Greg enjoyed boating on Lake Norman, attending Clemson sporting events, riding his Harley, and spending time with his children and five grandchildren, as well as extended family and friends. He proudly attended all five national championship games that the Clemson football team played in and witnessed the Tigers finish on top at the conclusion of the 1981, 2016 and 2018 seasons. He was lifetime member of the Sigma Nu fraternity, a professing Christian, a member of Olivet Baptist Church, Chair of the Lake Norman Republican Party Precinct of Catawba County, and an associate member of the Catawba County Republican Women's Club. He was generous, a friend to many, and loved by most who knew him. He lit up the room wherever he went. Greg was preceded in death by his grandparents, including Vii Leinfelder; father, Wallace Jones; mother, Candy Gilman and brother, Marc Jones. In addition to his wife of almost 39 years, he is survived by his son, Matthew Jones and wife, Robin; his daughter, Rachel and husband, Alex Dodd; five grandchildren, Raven, Jayden, Gunner, and Jaxson Jones and Annie Mae Dodd; his brother, Lester Jones (Ansley), his uncle, David Leinfelder (Rachel), his sister-in law, Charlie Jones, his niece, Madison Pendley (Jacob), and his nephews, Mitchell and Mason Jones, and his great-nephew, Bennett Pendley. A memorial service to celebrate Greg's life is at 2 p.m. Sunday, June 14 at Olivet Baptist Church, 7893 Monbo Road, Catawba, NC 28609 with the receiving of friends following the service.
