August 14, 1939 - February 1, 2021
Larry Eugene Sloan, 81, of Mooresville, NC. His story began in Aug of 1939 and he finished sharing stories on Feb 1, 2021. If you ever met Larry Sloan, you shared a story. I know that because he shared stories with everyone. He shared stories about everything from American Chestnut trees--which he has secretly planted in vacant lots around the county-- to sailboat steering secrets when in windless coves, to which mountain village in Italy had the best skiing and the friendliest restauranteurs. We are all going to miss him. Larry was preceded by his parents Troy and Arcola Sloan and his brother Gartrell Sloan. He is survived by his sister Gwendolyn Sloan Sink and sister-in-law Cynthia Davis, his nieces Donna Raynor (husband Alan Raynor), Tamberlyn Blinsink (husband Steven Blinsink), and Tanya Storm, and his nephew Daryl Sink (wife Jaquelin Sink). Not only was he a wonderful brother and uncle, he was also an amazing great-uncle to their kids: Dakota Raynor, Daulton Sink, Ansley Sink, Whitley Sink, Sloan Blinsink, Darby Blinsink, Malia Blinsink and Sloan Storm. He showed every one of them the wonders of Lake Norman and helped them experience the beautiful spots of his youth. He was born in Kannapolis and attended A.L. Brown High School. In the senior class in 1957 was voted, "The Friendliest," "The Most Original," and "The Most Cooperative." AL Brown only let a senior be listed with three Superlatives. So, I don't know which other ones he declined. But his dance card was always full. Larry attended Mars Hill College and UNCC before he taught radar as an Air Force Airman in Biloxi, MS. When he returned from military service, he whetted his adventurous spirit working at Eastern Airlines. This was his window to skiing adventures all over the world. Later he stayed a little closer to home working for PNG Propane and sharing stories about all the people he met while setting tanks and helping people keep warm. Larry was always one to help, always one to lend a smile and a laugh. He had a certain twinkle in his blue eyes when he met new people. And he could tell you minute details of so many of the people he met. He always made people feel welcome and remembered. Since Larry was such an avid observer of the natural world we would welcome donations to NC Wildlife Federation in lieu of flowers, should you be inclined. We will be honoring Larry with a graveside service on August 14, 2021, at 3 PM at Carolina Memorial Park in Concord. You can find more information and register at Cavin-Cook Funeral Home (www.CAVIN-COOK.com).
