Marcia Jane (Smith) Wenig died peacefully on Friday, July 17, 2015 at the Huntersville Oaks in Huntersville, NC. Marcia was born on May 8, 1939 in Fostoria, Ohio to the late Lee Wheeler Smith and the late Gretchen (Young) Smith. She is survived by her husband of 55 years, George Dale Wenig of Kings Mountain, NC; daughter, Holly Woitovich and husband, Stephen, of Matthews, NC; daughter, Laura Boyles and husband, Bruce, of Kings Mountain, NC; and son, George Andrew (Andy) Wenig and wife, Tonya (Walker) of Edinburgh, IN. She enjoyed spending time with her five grandchildren: Samantha Woitovich (Charlotte, NC), Nathan Woitovich (Charlotte, NC), Will Boyles (Kings Mountain, NC), Tyler Wenig (Edinburgh, IN) and Gretchen Boyles (Kings Mountain, NC). Marcia is survived by her brother, David Smith, and was preceded in death by her brothers, Richard Smith and Andrew Smith, and her sister, Georgia (Smith) Weaks. Marcia’s passion was teaching. She graduated from Ohio State University in March 1973 with a degree in Elementary Education. She spent 26 years teaching in the Ridgedale School System in Marion, Ohio, where she taught Kindergarten, 5th grade and 6th grade. She taught at Meeker, Morral and Ridgedale Elementary schools. Following retirement in Ohio, she moved to North Carolina where she taught at Longview Elementary in the Hickory City School System and at Cool Spring Elementary in the Iredell-Statesville School System. While at Cool Spring, she was recognized as the 2000-2001 Teacher of the Year. After she retired from teaching full time, she continued to serve as a substitute teacher. Her other passion was helping others as evidenced by over 15 years of service as the coordinator of a joint canned food drive and Christmas present distribution for needy families in her community. She served as the liaison between Morral School and Meeker United Methodist Church. Students donated cans of food each December and the members of the church donated presents and money for additional food. In her small rural community, about twelve families were helped each year. Her favorite pastime was spending time with her family, whether watching the grandchildren play sports or sitting down to eat one of her home-cooked meals and just talking. She also enjoyed going out to eat with her friends and playing cards or dominoes. She held regular scrapbook gatherings at her home. Marcia was the founder and served as the first Queen Mum of the Mazeppa Red Hat Floozies local chapter for four years. She was also an avid reader, particularly cookbooks and mysteries. The family will receive friends on Saturday, July 25, from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. in the Heritage House at Cavin-Cook Funeral Home in Mooresville, NC. The family will also receive friends between 1 and 1:45 p.m. prior to the memorial service scheduled for 2 p.m. on Sunday, July 26 at Triplett United Methodist Church, 838 Mazeppa Road, Mooresville, NC. Reverend Dr. Richard D. Auten will officiate the service. All are welcome to attend and celebrate Marcia's life.
