Joseph James Mullery, 89, of Mooresville, passed away peacefully Monday May 7, 2018. Joseph was born October 2, 1928 in Pittston, PA to the late John Mullery and Margaret McCarthy Mullery. In 1947, Joseph began his 54 year career with Trans World Airlines as a baggage handler in Newark, NJ. In 1957 after having served in the Marine Corps during the Korean War, he transfered to Miami, FL. with TWA where he would take on various roles, until his retirement from Operations in 2002. Joe loved his job and the adventures it provided, but most importantly the many friends he made while working at the airport. After retirement, he moved to Blue Ridge, GA. and finally Mooresville, NC, where he made many new and lasting friendships. A devoted family man, Joseph was most proud to be a father, grandfather and great-grandfather, acting as the center of an ever growing family. Joe went to bed each night, and woke up every morning, thinking of his loved ones and their needs. He was known by family and friends for his loving heart, booming laugh and generous nature. Joseph was an amazing father to his children and an incredible Poppy to his grand and great-grandchildren, and a wonderful friend. He was loved by all and will be sorely missed. In addition to his parents, Joe is preceded in death by his brothers, John, Harry, William, and Francis Mullery, his sisters, Marie McConnon and Marguerite Senchyshyn, his granddaughter, Elizabeth Wyant and great-grandson, Joseph James Ackerman. He is survived by his six children and their spouses, Joseph & Regine Mullery, Mary & Frank Wyant, Paul & Vera Mullery, Susan & Glenn Rice, Joanne Mullery & Cynthia Strauss, and Catherine & James Moore as well as his grandchildren Lisa, Patricia, Sean, Kathryn, Kelly, Eric, Jake, Evan, Cara, Brandon and Samantha. His special joy at the end of his life were his great-granchildren Bradley, Blake, George, Ryder and Madison. Joe is also survived by his former wife, Joan Fitzsimmons Mullery, his sister Louise Traficante and his sisters-in-law, Marie and Marta Mullery and many nieces and nephews. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 9:00 AM on Monday, May 14, 2018 at St. Therese Catholic Church, Mooresville. Burial will follow the service at 11:00 AM at Salisbury National Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 6:00 - 8:00 PM on Sunday, May 13 at Cavin-Cook Funeral Home with a prayer service at 7:00 PM.In lieu of flowers, memorials in his name may be made to St. Jude Children's Hospital, 262 Danny Thomas Place, Memphis, TN 38105.
