Janie Elizabeth Harris Jones, 94, of Statesville, passed away on Saturday, November 14, 2020. She was born on September 25, 1926 in Statesville, NC, to the late Richard J. Harris and Mary Jane Smith Harris. Mrs. Jones was a retired French and English teacher for the Iredell-Statesville School Systems. She was a member of Mt. Pleasant AME Zion Church in Statesville. Mrs. Jones was a lifetime member of the NAACP; Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority. She was also a member of the Docess Chapter Order of Eastern Star; where she was a worthy Matron of 31st District, loyal lady ruler of Joseph P. Evans Assembly, NCAE, NCTE, and was secretary of Lambda Upsilon Omega. Her greatest achievement was her children and grandchildren, through them she will live on. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Lawson Warren Jones, Sr.; son, Derwin Lamaar Jones; brother, Richard James Harris, Jr.; sisters, Melva Harris Saunders, Ruby Thomas, Rosella Harris Pierce Vaughn, Roberta Harris Morrison, & infant twins. She is survived by her sons, Dr. Martin Antonio (Suzie) Jones, Lawson W. Jones, Jr. & Deborah Walker; grandchildren, Andrea Nicholson, Timothy McGee, Warrina Moss (Donald) Sibby, Tiffany Moss, Latoya Moss, Alexis Jones, Lawson Smith, Alisha Parsons, Derwin Jones, Timothy (Latoya) Chambers, Trisha (Tony) Gallegos, and Tanis Arlene; a host of great grandchildren and great great grandchildren; and her fiercely loving pet Chihuahua “Fido”. The family will receive friends on Thursday, November 19, 2020 from 1:30 PM-2:00 PM with a service following at 2:00 PM at Mt. Pleasant AME Zion Church, Statesville. Entombment will follow the service at Iredell Memorial Park where her son Dr. Martin will give her a final Eastern Star ceremonial farewell tribute.
