Corey Jay Royal, 33, of Troutman, passed away on Wednesday, March 22, 2017 at his residence. He was born on February 22, 1984 in Batavia, NY, to Craig Steven Royal and Wendy Jay Wait Royal. Corey was a 2002 graduate of South Iredell High School and took some courses in Gunsmithing at Catawba Community College. He was previously employed with Penske Racing for 6 years. Corey was born with Spina Bifida and did not let that slow him down, he enjoyed water skiing, snow skiing, and working with his hands. Through the Make-A-Wish Foundation he was able to meet Dale Earnhardt, his favorite racecar driver, in 1994. He was preceded in death by paternal great grandmothers, Annie Sue Hall Royal and Lottie Rorick; maternal grandparents, E. Ann and John Wait; paternal grandfather, Zara Hall Royal; uncle, Bobby Caldwell; aunt, Mary Lou Thompson; and his dog, Buster. In addition to his parents, he is survived by his paternal grandmother, Shelia Royal and Dave Nixon; sister, Liberty Green and husband, Kenneth; brother, Michael Royal and wife, Mary; nieces, Mary Connelly and Elizabeth; uncle, Christopher Wait and Darlene Fazzary; aunt, Sue Buscaglia and husband, Russell; cousins, Justin and Kaley Wait, Kyle Intihar and wife, Kristen, Steven Intihar, Courtney Intihar, and Sheldon Serefine; and his beloved dog, Checkers. A Celebration of Corey’s life will be held on Friday, March 24 from 5:00-7:00 PM with a time of remembrance at 7:00 PM at Heritage House of Cavin-Cook Funeral Home.
