Benny Bruce Howard, 74, of Sherrills Ford, NC, passed away on Tuesday, February 20, 2018 at Sherrills Ford Hospice House. He was born on May 30, 1943 in Dixon, Illinois to the late Benny Eston Howard and Naomi White Howard Reglin. In addition to his parents, Benny is preceded in death by step-father and friend, Floyd Reglin; sisters, Ann Lorraine Dawson (Howard) and Sandra Jean Howard. He is survived by his loving wife Marilyn E. Howard; children; Angela Brunen (Brian), Benny J. Howard; grandson, Cohen and many loving nieces and nephews. He graduated from Dixon High School in 1961 and Southern Illinois University in 1967 with an Engineering Degree. His engineering career took him to various companies in his career such as Marion Lab, Nice Pak, SenMed that led into Johnson & Johnson and Rock Tenn. He and his wife retired to North Carolina on Lake Norman in Sherrills Ford where he enjoyed boating and relaxation by spending time with family and the Friday Night Group. Ben was loved by lifelong friends and family for his wit and integrity. He served in the United States Army from 1967 to 1969 which included a year in Vietnam as a Huey Helicopter Crew Chief. There are so many to thank for their care, love and support before, during, and after his Bilateral Lung Transplant due to IPF. To his children, Ben J., Angie and husband, Brian who were always there with love and laughter. No job was too difficult for them to take on. Special thanks to brother-in-law's, Dick, Dale and sister-in-law, Nancy, and their families for always being there. Special friends were always near and dear even if they were miles away or just around the corner. To the friends and Vets from Richard’s Coffee Shop, who brought many stories and laughter. Thanks to Pastor Josh Eller and the congregation for their ongoing prayers and support, to the staff at Duke Medical Center, Dr. J Reynolds, Coordinator Jennifer Spivey and the entire Duke Transplant team, Dr. Naomi Simon, Dr. Williford, Catawba Regional Hospice where Linda, Lynn, Meg and Jenny were always ready to serve, the caring staff of Bayada who were there for us in any capacity to help with Ben’s care, Pharmacist George and Mike at Rite Aide for their excellent care and support during the past nine years, the Outpatient Lab Techs at Lake Norman, Donna and Seta who were always there with a smile and a hug. Special praise for the staff at Salisbury VA who served us in every capacity with professionalism and care. A memorial Service will be held on Monday, February 26, 2018 at 11:00 AM at Cavin-Cook Funeral Home Chapel with full military honors. The family will receive friends prior to the service from 10:00 – 11:00 AM at the funeral home. There will be a reception following the service in the Heritage House of Cavin-Cook Funeral Home.
