Doris T. Thomas
December 10, 1930 - February 21, 2012
Doris T. Thomas, 81, of the Gardens of Statesville, went to be with the Lord on Tuesday morning February 21, 2012 at the Gordon Hospice House.
She was born on December 10, 1930 in Norfolk, Virginia and was the daughter of the late Thomas W. Thomas and Marie Dozier Thomas. Doris married the late Col. Robert J. Thomas on August 2, 1950. Bob served in the USMC. Together they raised a family and traveled the world serving the country in the Marine Corps for thirty-two years.
She is survived by her two children, Lt. Col. Thomas W. Thomas II of Beaufort, SC and Catherine and husband Rev. Peter W. Varvaris of Statesville. Doris had seven grandchildren Tiffany and her husband Jesse Sloane, Taylor Thomas, Kristen and her husband Jason VonWachenfeldt, Philip Varvaris and Nancy Thomas. She had three great grandchildren Judah and Micah Sloane and Ava Marie VonWachenfeldt.
Doris loved being with her family. She enjoyed painting, reading, writing, the beach and talking to Jesus. She was a one of a kind original, strong, caring and loving. She spent her life loving her family, friends and others well.
A memorial service celebrating God’s grace in the life of Doris will be held at 3:00 p.m. Saturday, February 25, at Holy Trinity Lutheran Church on Hartness Rd. Her son-in-law, Rev. Peter Varvaris of New Hope Missions Church, Mooresville will officiate. The family will receive friends and family immediately preceding the service at 2:00 p.m. There will be a light supper following the service.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Hospice & Palliative Care of Iredell County.
The family would like to thank the staff of The Gardens of Statesville for providing a home and loving care for the last year, her Hospice caregivers Diane Poirier and Cassie Laws, the Hospice Volunteers, the staff of the Gordon Hospice House, her Hospice Chaplains Rev. Tom Corbell, Lynn Kunkle and Lynne Lepley, and her doctors, Dr. Stout, Dr. Shore, Dr. Evans and Joy Macnickol, PA. The family praises the Lord for each of you.
