Carmella Christine May

January 12, 1941 - November 16, 2012

Mrs. Carmella Christine May, 71, of Mooresville, N.C., passed away Friday, Nov. 16, 2012, in Heritage Place Adult Living Center in Troutman, N.C.
She was born Jan. 12, 1941, in Chicago, Ill., and grew up in Hancock, Wis. She was one of nine children of the late Nunzio and Loreta Cotrone, who were Italian immigrants.
She lived in Marion, Ind., from 1959 to 1990. She attended Marion College as a young woman and for several years worked at Marion General Hospital as a nurse’s aide. After marrying, she was a stay-at-home mother until her three children went to school. She was very active at Nelson Street Wesleyan Church and also attended Hillside Wesleyan Church, Sunnycrest Baptist Church and Lakeview Wesleyan Church, all in Marion. For 15 years, she worked in the meat department at Marsh Supermarkets in Marion. After moving to Mooresville, she worked in the meat department of Food Lion stores for 15 years. She was kind and caring, and many of her customers called her friend.
Mrs. May was devoted to her children. She sewed most of their clothing and also enjoyed crocheting. She is remembered as an excellent listener and compassionate person. She was an avid gardener of vegetables and flowers and loved to pull weeds. The highlight of her life was her only trip overseas, to Italy with her brothers and sisters to visit their father’s birthplace and meet their Italian cousins.
She was preceded in death by sister Rosette Brunner, brother Rev. Nunzio Donald Cotrone, and two sisters-in-law, Ella Cotrone and Beverly Cotrone. She is survived by her husband, Charles May of Mooresville; daughter Christina May of Vilas and her partner Linda Coutant; daughter Cathy May of Mooresville; son Chuck May and his wife, Becky, of Spring Lake, Mich.; and grandchildren, Alexa Spargo of Greentown, Ind.; and Emily and Jacob May of Spring Lake Mich.; brother-in-law Rev. Richard Brunner of Birnamwood, Wis.; sister-in-law Flora Cotrone of Dayton, Ohio; brother Rev. Mitchell Cotrone and wife, Janice, of Mansfield, Mo.; brother Carl Cotrone and his partner Bev Krenz of Hancock, Wis.; sister Annina Wilson and husband, Jay, of Manitowoc, Wis.; brother, Daniel Cotrone and wife, Jean, from Milwaukee, Wisc; sister Kathleen Dix and husband, Gene, of Wausau, Wis.; and brother David Cotrone and wife, Tricia, of Athens, Wis. She is also survived by many nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be held in Hancock, Wis., at a later date. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Heritage Place Adult Living Center, 1372 Eufola Road, Troutman, NC 28677.
