History of Cavin-Cook Funeral Home

Cavin Funeral Home was founded by J.P. Cavin in 1925, with the first location located on West Moore Ave. in Mooresville, North Carolina. In 1935 J.P. Cavin died and the funeral home was moved up to Main Street in Mooresville where the business flourished for the next 36 years. During this time period the funeral home operation was ran by J.P. Cavin’s sons, Courtney, Bill and Bob Cavin, and J.P.’s wife, Clara Cavin, who died in 1984 at the age of 104 years old. In addition to Mooresville location, Cavin Funeral Home had two other locations in Troutman and Huntersville, North Carolina

In 1972 Cavin Funeral Home needed room for expansion and moved the funeral home to the present location at 494 East Plaza Drive in Mooresville. In 1977 the Cavin family sold their interest in the funeral home to Service Corporation International (SCI), a large corporation that own a number of funeral homes across the United States and abroad. Then in February of 1990 partners James V. Houston and H. Mike Cook purchased the funeral home from Service Corporation International, making Cavin Funeral Home again, locally owned and operated. In 1995 H. Mike Cook purchased James V. Houston’s interest in the business and became sole owner and President of Cavin Funeral Home. A short time later, the name of the funeral home was changed to Cavin-Cook Funeral Home.

Owner H. Mike Cook started working for Cavin-Cook Funeral home while he was still in high school. He began working full time in 1973 and for the last 35 years has kept the tradition that J.P. Cavin started back in 1925 by providing families with the best in funeral and cremation services.

In the last decade, the Lake Norman area has drawn a wide diversity of people and growth, making it one of the fastest growing areas in the country. To adapt to these changes and meeting the future needs of our families, Cavin-Cook Funeral Home now offers on-site cremations in our full service crematory. The crematory was built in 2004 and offers families that choose cremation numerous service options.
